Prescribing Hope

Growing up in a foster home, pediatrician Dr. Carolyn Boone didn't have much.

But, thanks to her foster mother, she had books, and she quickly developed a love of reading. Books opened up new worlds for Dr. Boone and she was taught to share her passion for reading with others, a lesson she took to heart.

Now, almost six decades later,  Dr. Boone offers books - and a healthy dose of hope - to the children and families she serves in her Richmond, Virginia pediatric practice. She's a longtime Reach Out and Read provider whose spirit for giving back caught the attention of NBC's The Today Show.

Her story, and her devotion to Reach Out and Read, were featured on The Today Show's "Hope to It" series.

Today Show ChildI had the honor of flying to Richmond from Boston to help coordinate the shoot with NBC.In myfour years at Reach Out and Read, I don't think I was ever as moved as I was seeing Dr. Boone interact with her patients.

To the families she serves, Dr. Boone is more than just a pediatrician. She is a friend, a counselor, a confidant, and most of all, a believer.

She truly understands that every child has potential to succeed and that with a prescription to read - and parents who take her message seriously - the world is full of endless possibility.

Many of the children I met at her pediatric practice said they want to be "the next Dr. Boone" when they grow up.

I have no doubt that will happen.

Well, done! I learned that habit from my mom, and of course, passed on to my children, In Portuguese and also with a not so perfect, English. They are two lovely young adults. It is really a prescription of HOPE!
