About Reach Out and Read Greater San Diego
Reach out and Read San Diego(RORSD) Collaborative is working to help expand and sustain Reach out and Read (ROR) in San Diego by recruiting new sites, providing communication among existing sites, providing support with progress reports and book inventory, sending out trainers for ROR training of new staff and physicians and assisting with and coordinating fundraising for book money. Last year 32 pediatric clinics distributed 41,000 books to 33,000 children in San Diego County. RORSD Collaborative is run under the leadership of the American Academy of Pediatrics, CA Chapter 3. Funders: In February 2007 The First 5 Commission of San Diego County provided 3 years of funding to RORSD Collaborative to support infrastructure and capacity building. At the same time Reading is Fundamental provided a matching grant to provide books to 40% of the children served by ROR in San Diego. First 5 funding was used to match this grant. Partners: Some of RORSD's partners include the San Diego County Libraries, the San Diego City Libraries, Community Clinics, Children's Primary Care Medical Groups, and Native American Health Centers. Newsletter: RORSD publishes a bi-monthly newsletter "Storytime" which can be viewed at www.aapca3.org. Collaborative Meetings: The RORSD Collaborative meets quarterly. Please contact Tara Milbrand for more information at tmilbrand@aapca3.org Donations: RORSD appreciates the donation of new and gently used books. Used books are then available for siblings and are used to stock waiting room bookshelves. To make such a donation, contact Tara Milbrand. Financial donations are also greatly appreciated. Our greatest need is to underwrite the cost of the new books distributed by pediatricians. For as little as $5.50 a year, a child can benefit from ROR literacy guidance and the gift of two new books. Please make your tax-deductible donations payable to: "AAPCA3" and send to P.O. Box 22212, San Diego, CA 92192. Volunteers: Volunteers are a vital part of the ROR program and are needed in all waiting rooms to share books with children and their families while they wait for their appointments. Volunteers receive specific ROR training prior to placement from the specific location where they will be working. To find a ROR site near you at which to volunteer, please contact Tara Milbrand.
