- Myra Jones-Taylor, Ph.D., Commissioner of Early
Childhood, State of Connecticut
- Julia Irwin, Ph.D., Associate Professor of
Psychology, SCSU; Senior Scientist, Haskins
Each speaker presented on various aspects regarding the
importance of early literacy and reading from birth, and the
profound effects that early childhood education has on the brain
and overall development. Children who have less exposure to books
and early literacy intervention are more likely to suffer
developmentally and lack critical literacy skills, than children
who are read to more frequently. The bottom line? Reading matters
and books build better brains!

ONCE UPON A TIME Fundraiser
Reach Out and Read Connecticut
launched its first fundraiser on April 5, 2014 - ONCE UPON A TIME.
It was a truly magical evening where storybooks and fairy
tales came to life through the work of inspired pairings of
caterers, restaurants and beverage companies with designers, party
planners and artists. Each pairing created a storybook themed
station for guests to delight in.
