Forum on Early Literacy Experiences, The Brain, and Child Development

On Thursday, November 19, the Literacy Coalition of Greater New Haven and Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) collaborated to bring us a forum on Early Literacy Experiences, The Brain, and Child Development.

The SCSU Psychology Department and its Journal of Student Psychological Research hosted the forum, which featured three fantastic speakers:

Each speaker presented on various aspects regarding the importance of early literacy and reading from birth, and the profound effects that early childhood education has on the brain and overall development. Children who have less exposure to books and early literacy intervention are more likely to suffer developmentally and lack critical literacy skills, than children who are read to more frequently. The bottom line? Reading matters and books build better brains!

Rocking the Road to Read with Bob's Outreach!

On March 2, Bob's Discount Furniture, in partnership with Reach Out and Read, launched their new initiative, "Rocking the Road to Read with Bob's Outreach". This new initiative will focus on supporting early literacy by bringing smiles and books to local children's hopsitals and reading the newly updated Cat in the Hat book; Oh, The Things You Can Do That Are Good for You! written by Tish Rabe and recently read at the White House by First Lady Michelle Obama.

Cathy Poulin, Public Relations Director, Bob's Discount Furniture with Tish Rabe, best-selling children's book author.

To kick off the year-long initiative, Bob's Outreach presented a $10,000 check to Reach Out and Read at the CCMC School, an affiliate of Connecticut Children's Medical Center, which provides comprehensive special education for students, from age five to 21, who require intensive intervention due to emotional, cognitive, developmental and/or learning problems. Dr. Seuss author Tish Rabe talked about being an author and about her book, Oh, The Things You Can Do That are Good for You!. Each child received their own new copy of the book, donated by Bob's Outreach. Bob's Outreach is also donating copies of Tish Rabe's Love You, Hug You, Read to You books to the Reach Out and Read program at Connecticut Children's.

"We hope to not only bring smiles to these children's faces, but share our love for reading," says Cathy Poulin, public relations director for Bob's Discount Furniture.

ONCE UPON A TIME Fundraiser

Reach Out and Read Connecticut launched its first fundraiser on April 5, 2014 - ONCE UPON A TIME.  It was a truly magical evening where storybooks and fairy tales came to life through the work of inspired pairings of caterers, restaurants and beverage companies with designers, party planners and artists. Each pairing created a storybook themed station for guests to delight in.
