Donor feature: Become an "Equalizer" and Help All Children to Grow Up with Books
Year-end brings a flurry of activity in the development office at Reach Out and Read as donors make gifts to help ensure that children everywhere grow up with books and a love of reading. For one family foundation, this meant making a generous gift to the National Center as a way to equalize opportunities for children with few books in their homes. As one trustee explained, "My family established our foundation as a way to give back to others. As a biologist, I have always supported endeavors to protect habitats and nature. I became interested in supporting literacy as I feel that lack of reading skills contributes to failure in school which is linked to so many of the obstacles facing the poor. I see Reach Out and Read as a logical, simple intervention that succeeds in addressing the challenge of preparing children for success in school and in life. Using Charity Navigator, I learned how well managed and financially responsible ROR is; I also learned that ROR can stretch my gift to maximize the number of children we can reach."
Reach Out and Read thanks all its supporters for the generous gifts made at year-end and throughout the year which fuel our mission to make love of books and reading part of every childhood! We are proud that ROR is one of only 8% of organizations that earned a four star rating from Charity Navigator for the third consecutive year, meaning that Reach Out and Read outperforms most charities in America in terms of fiscal responsibility and financial soundness.
