Reach Out and Read - Washington receives grant from Thrive by Five
More children in Washington state will be ready to read thanks to the work of Reach Out and Read and Thrive by Five Washington.
Reach Out and Read received one of the first Reading Readiness Grants from Thrive by Five Washington, supporting a new ROR coalition in Washington State. ROR Washington State was created to recruit and support new medical practices to become ROR sites; provide ongoing support and training to existing ROR sites; coordinate and seek additional funding for ROR programs across Washington; and support the integration of ROR into statewide early learning systems. Dr. Jill Sells and Tracey Yee are leading the Washington effort.
"This Thrive by Five grant is significant because it puts statewide support behind our Reach Out and Read efforts," says Dr. Jill Sells, the Medical Director of ROR Washington. "We welcome it as the first step toward making ROR an integral part of early learning services and systems for all children in the state; with ROR sites, doctors, nurses and books becoming part of growing up healthy in Washington State."
Thrive by Five Washington is a Washington state non-profit created in 2006 as a public-private partnership for early learning. Thrive by Five partners with parents, communities, philanthropic organizations, business and government to develop a sustainable system for statewide, early learning improvement. Thrive brings together public and private leadership and investments to support children and their families in the first five years of life, engaging the Governor's office, the state Department of Early Learning, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and many other foundations and corporations. Thrive's mission is to work with communities and families throughout Washington to help ensure that every child in the state has the opportunity, from birth, to be successful in school and in life. The Reading Readiness grants support community-based initiatives that promote early literacy and reading readiness across Washington state.
