Boston Marathon 2008: Running for Readers

For the fourth year "running," the Reach Out and Read National Center is delighted to receive three charity race numbers for the Boston Marathon from a generous corporate donor. We have assembled a team of dedicated runners to represent our mission of making literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric care on Patriots Day, April 21st, when they will participate in the Boston Marathon's 26.2 mile run!

"I love to run and I am proud to be running Boston on behalf of an organization that takes such a unique, effective and personal approach to solving a national problem" said ROR team member Kerry Hall, 24, an employee of Weber Shandwick in Cambridge. The other two runners are Victor Matheson, an Economics professor at Holy Cross College and collegiate Division I soccer referee, and Paul McDaniels, the father of two young children and former baseball player.

Matheson says that his admiration for ROR stemmed from a 2005 Boston Globe article. "Doctors Barry Zuckerman and Perri Klass had me hooked when they wrote about the 4-year old boy who said, 'And I get a book today, right?' remembering past visits. 'I get a book to take home and keep!'" Matheson will carry this commitment to ROR from Hopkinton to Boston during the 2008 Boston Marathon.

Reach Out and Read is thrilled to be able to provide our runners with the opportunity to participate in the Boston Marathon and we are grateful for their generous support. We wish our team the best of luck as race day approaches and want to our offer our most sincere appreciation to all marathoners who have chosen to run for a cause.

Look for updates in the next newsletter about how Team ROR did!
