Sovereign Bank Helps ROR Put Books Into the Hands of Children
For the third year, Reach Out and Read and Sovereign Bank celebrated the holiday season together with a book drive to benefit children in need. The book drive offered Sovereign customers in communities throughout the Northeast the opportunity to make brand-new books available to kids who participate in ROR. This year, Sovereign Bank and its customers donated more than $33,000 to help put books into the homes of children.

Through the entire month of December, Sovereign accepted donations at all of its 750 Community Banking Offices. Every $2 donation helps us to purchase one of five classic children's titles for a ROR clinic. Customers chose from Where the Wild Things Are, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Clifford's Animal Sounds, Goodnight Moon and the Spanish-language version, Buenas Noches, Luna, when making a donation.
"Books in the homes of the children participating in Reach Out and Read, many of whom are growing up in poverty, mean that these children will also benefit from the attention and enjoyment when their parents read to them", said Barry Zuckerman, MD, Reach Out and Read Chairman and CEO. "This is a gift that keeps on giving!"
ROR and Sovereign celebrated the success of the book drive on Monday, February 11, with a check presentation ceremony at Uphams Corner Health Center in Dorchester. The Fields Corner branch of Sovereign in Dorchester collected the most donations of any branch in New England for the drive, and Kim Williams, Sovereign's Vice President/District Executive and M. Jeanette Simmons, Community Banking Manager of the Fields Corner Branch, presented the check to Matt Ferraguto, ROR Director of Communications, and Elise Henricks, MD, Medical Director for Reach Out and Read at the health center.
We were fortunate to have benefited once again from Sovereign's Holiday Giving Campaign and we are grateful to Sovereign, their employees, and their customers for undertaking such a generous and successful campaign.
