Rachael Wilcox Completes Tour de France Leg to Support Reach Out and Read
In July, Rachael Wilcox, cyclist from Ipswich, MA, rode in the Etape du Tour 2009 to support Reach Out and Read. The Etape du Tour is a 107-mile stage of the Tour de France, one of the most difficult legs of the race. Because Rachael's desire to help kids through reading is as important to her as riding, she dedicated her ride to Reach Out and Read by raising critical funding to help put more children's books in the homes of families in need.

8500 riders started the grueling Etape du Tour, but
only 7396 successfully completed it. Rachael was one of only 234 women to finish the race, making her accomplishment even more impressive.

Rachael said, "Reading connects you to your dreams…When I was a little girl there were two mainstays in my life: books and my bike. I rode my bike all day every day into the night. And then I would read my books. These two activities are what expanded my view of the world and gave me ideas about what is possible. It let me dream and reading helped me make my dreams come true."

In the end, Rachael raised more than $5,000 to support Reach Out and Read. ROR congratulates Rachael on her incredible accomplishment and thanks her for the extraordinary show of support for both ROR and early literacy.
