Doing Double Duty: Blue Hat, Green Hat
A Book for Bedtime and the Exam Room

After countless readings of Blue Hat, Green Hat, a top choice for health supervision visits as well as a personal family favorite with my three children, this fun and interactive book meets the KISS (keep it simple and silly) criteria for early readers. Blue Hat, Green Hat is appealing to readers of all ages.

Here are 10 reasons to consider introducing Blue Hat, Green Hat by Sandra Boynton at well child visits as a welcome addition to family libraries.

10. Easily memorized - With only 10 words repeatedly used and a total of 46 words in the entire book, it takes only one reading to be an expert parent reader.

9. Cheers up crying two-year-olds - Open any page and begin reading. It is difficult not to smile when you see a turkey with his clothes on wrong….. and then say oops!!

8. Developmental screening - This book could almost replace the Denver II screening in the office. Ask children to point out body parts, articles of clothing, different colors and animals.

7. Teaches we all make mistakes - The turkey demonstrates that new skills such as putting on clothes are acquired by learning from our "oops". Additionally reminds parents that two-year-olds are not the only ones who make interesting fashion choices.

6. It's a board book - Indestructible to chewing, tearing, tug of war, being thrown down stairs and other creative, off label, uses by preschoolers.

5. Enables role reversal - This book allows a two-year-old to read to you for a change.

4. Doctors visits and shots are not so bad with this book in hand - A non randomized comprehensive observational study was conducted with my three children (n=3) which confirms that an entertaining book improves childhood behavior in most situations. (p < 0.0000001).

3. Fun for parents - Often a child's favorite book will put the parent, instead of the child, to sleep. Blue Hat, Green Hat doesn't get old even after reading every night or when they say "read it to me again".

2. It is for people between the age of 0 and 99 years old…. But Not the Hippopotamus - Another book by Sandra Boynton, also worth adding to the family library.

1. Oops! - Any book that uses this word on every page deserves a standing ovation -- need I say more?

Fortunately there are plenty of books that also meet the keep it simple and silly (KISS) criteria. Other excellent KISS certified books to consider by Sandra Boynton include, The Going to Bed Book, Moo, Baa, La La La! and Barnyard Dance!.

One of the most valuable memories I have of Blue Hat, Green Hat is walking into the bedroom and seeing Landon (5 years) with Kelsey (2 years) on his lap and hearing them laugh together each time they read, "Oops!" If this much fun happens reading this book in our home, I can only imagine the influence this book has in other homes.
