Book Updates

2009 Reach Out and Read Catalog

Expect to see the new ROR Catalog in your mailboxes by mid-December!

On the cover this year is a new book called "Wolf!" It's the story of a would-be big, bad wolf who discovers that the local animals are too busy reading to be bothered with him. Discover what the wolf does to get the respect of the other animals in this tale of the power of books.

You'll notice that the new catalog is much trimmer than previous issues. A number of books have been removed -- look for them in the refreshed collections -- but there is a good reason for the leaner look. ROR and Scholastic will be approaching publishers for deeper discounts and for new titles for the 2010 catalog. Only by removing books can we afford to bring in new books at the low costs available only to ROR Sites. There are dozens of wonderful books that we are considering for the
catalog, but the cost of each book and the discounts publishers provide are critical to what ultimately goes into the catalog.

Scholastic will be offering book specials on its ROR online store once it is updated. Check the myROR Discussion Forum for future updates on the store.

If you have any questions about the catalog or book suggestions, please email Jackie Miller at Jackie.Miller@reachoutandread.org.

Sustainability Books

By next week, you will receive notification of your FY2009 Round #1 Sustainability Award, and can expect to receive your ROR Essential Book Packs directly from Scholastic Inc. in early- to mid-December. (ROR Sites qualifying for a very large number of books will receive their books in two shipments, with the second shipment arriving in February 2009.)

If you have questions about your sustainability award, please contact programs-intern@reachoutandread.org. Click here to see the ROR Essential Book Pack titles.

Our Neighbor: The Horn Book

One of the advantages of moving to 56 Roland Street is that ROR now has The Horn Book as our neighbor. For more than 80 years, The Horn Book Magazine has been the leading journal in children's literature, offering reviews and insights into the best children's and young adult books. Today, the Horn Book Magazine and the Horn Book Guide are still the leading review journals for professionals and anyone interested in children's literature.

The Horn Book also has a free online newsletter. Click here to sign up for your free subscription.

Looking for Writers

In each issue, the ROR Programs Newsletter typically features a book review from a medical provider on how s/he uses a favorite book in the exam room to engage a child and to determine if a child is reaching age-appropriate milestones.

If you would like to be the author of one of our next features, just email books@reachoutandread.org and tell us what book you would like to write about for a future newsletter.

What Was Your Favorite Book as a Child/What Books Do You Like to Give as Gifts?

The ROR National Center is often asked to provide book guidance to a wide variety of people. It's fun to create the book lists for different projects but it would be even more enjoyable to share what are some of the childhood favorites of medical providers, coordinators, and others involved with ROR who are helping to provide children with books every day.

We would also like to know your favorite books to give to children, including books you choose for teenagers.

Email your favorites and top picks to books@reachoutandread.org. Please include the book titles, your name, clinic, and city and state, as well as your ROR role.
