National Center Updates

Expansion Update

Reach Out and Read continues to grow!
Thanks to private funds raised within the National Center, funds and books offered from state and regional Coalitions, and funds that new sites have acquired through donations and other sources, 93 new Sites have joined Reach Out and Read since July 1, 2008. Because of reductions in our Federal grant, new Sites are required to demonstrate that they (working with the National Center and state and regional ROR offices) have at least 50 percent of the money or books needed to sustain their program for the first year. For Sites that do not meet this criterion, the ROR National Center has established an ROR Waitlist for Federal Funds. All Waitlisted Sites have been approved by the Application Review Committee and are awaiting funding from private or Federal sources. Since July 1, 28 Sites from 16 states have joined our Waitlist.

Medical Provider Survey Results

Thank you to the 750 medical providers who took part in our Medical Provider Survey. Overall, the results demonstrate that nationwide, the program is being conducted in accordance with the model. 66% of respondents indicate that they give the book at the beginning of the well-child visit, and 70% indicate that they are able to give books in over 80% of their well-child visits. An interesting finding is that about 50% of providers received their training from the video, while the other 50% are trained in an on-site workshop.

In the notes section of the report, the common themes within the comments were the desire for increased support and assistance with fundraising and requests for more variety in book selection (including a wider array of culturally-appropriate books, for children who are Vietnamese or live in Appalachia, for example). Over the Summer, we followed up with all of the questions and requests for materials (primarily training videos).

Many providers expressed the importance of the program in their pediatric practice. Dr. Norma Rosales at Venice Family Clinic in Los Angeles noted, "I cannot imagine not having the ROR program. The developmental observations I make and use as an opportunity to support the mastery of the child and parent is invaluable. Seeing children of all ages love and value the interaction of an adult and a book is priceless. It is great that children no longer ask for a lollipop, they want a book!"

New Communications Materials Available!

ROR has made a number of new materials available to all ROR Coalitions and Sites. If you have any questions about any of these materials, please contact communications@reachoutandread.org.
  • New Fundraising Video: We have developed a new 5-minute promotional video that is ideal for Sites interested in holding fundraising events or introducing a prospective donor to ROR. It incorporates the new per-child cost of the five-year ROR program ($40.00). You can view the new video on our YouTube Channel. If you would like us to mail you a copy, email your address to communications@reachoutandread.org.
  • FY 2008 Annual Report / 2009 Calendar: ROR just released its FY 2008 Annual Report, which doubles as a 2009 calendar complete with monthly reading tips for parents! Click here to view the PDF of the Annual Report online.
  • Reading Tips for Parents: Reading Rockets has created a series of reading tips for parents of children of all ages (babies through 3rd graders) and has co-branded their one pagers with Reach Out and Read. They are available on myROR.org in both English and Spanish on the Materials Page.
  • Policy Case for ROR: We have updated and modernized the Policy Case for Reach Out and Read and made it available to all Sites and Coalitions online. This is a great document to use during Legislative Site Visits or meetings with Corporations, Foundations, and Donors.
  • ROR CafePress Store is Open for Business: Reach Out and Read has created its own logo store on the www.cafepress.comcafepress.com website! Now you can buy hundreds of items with the ROR logo, including hats, T-shirts, sweatshirts, pins, magnets, tote bags, coasters, stationery, clocks, and much, much more! Click here to view all the items for sale. Best of all, a portion of every sale goes to ROR! The Reach Out and Read CafePress store will soon take over for the National Center store on myROR.org as the exclusive vendor of most ROR merchandise (with the exception of literacy materials and a few items, like ROR red aprons and balloons).
Thank you to ROR-Michigan for the terrific idea (they've got their own logo store as well).

Coalitions and Sites can buy merchandise through our store, or create your own store with your Coalition's logo!
