Reach Out and Read Quality Improvement Initiative

Forty diverse primary care practices in Florida have successfully completed a Reach Out and Read pilot project to develop and apply Quality Improvement (QI) tools and techniques to improve:
  • The proportion of well-child visits for children ages 6 months through 5 years who received an age-appropriate book, and
  • Whose parents received advice about the importance of reading aloud to their children.
After four Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles in five cohort groups, all Sites participating in the project demonstrated significant improvements in both outcomes.

Once completed, information about the QI project was presented at annual conferences of several healthcare and quality improvement organizations, including the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, the National Initiative for Children's Healthcare Quality, National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, Reach Out and Read Illinois, and the recent Reach Out and Read Coalition Leadership Meeting in Washington, DC. The Reach Out and Read poster won an award and has been selected to present an article for inclusion in The Permanente Journal. Future presentations are also planned.

Members of the Reach Out and Read QI Advisory Group and National Center staff are working to make the QI tools and materials available via myROR.org, so that participating clinics and practices can use them to improve compliance with the ROR model. The ability to input data and display analytic charts on-line in real time will facilitate immediate adaptation of clinics' Reach Out and Read-related processes, allowing for improved coordination of care, better delivery systems, and improved outcomes. The Reach Out and Read QI team is also exploring the possibility of the QI project's compatibility with American Board of Pediatrics requirements for Maintenance of Certification.
