Federal Funding Update
The Prescribe a Book Act:
We need your help! We are still working to secure co-sponsors for H.R. 4449, the Prescribe a Book Act (PABA) in the House. PABA would authorize Reach Out and Read as a funded program in FY09 - FY13. Please contact your U.S. Representatives and ask them to co-sponsor this bill.

ROR American Indian/Alaska Native Update
We have formed a new coalition for ROR American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) which has two primary goals: to expand the number of Indian Health Service (IHS), Tribal and Urban sites that participate in the ROR program, and to increase the availability of Native-themed children's books for ROR programs around the country. This is a collaborative effort between the ROR National Center, the IHS, the Centers for Disease Control Native Diabetes Wellness Program, and the American Academy of Pediatrics' Committee on Native American Child Health.

ROR Awards and Honors
Reach Out and Read Receives Fast Company's Social Capitalist Award
In December, Fast Company Magazine and the Monitor Group named Reach Out and Read as one of the winners of their fifth annual Social Capitalist Award. The award recognizes outstanding performance by entrepreneurial organizations in the non-profit sector, and honors our work putting books into the hands of children who need them the most.

Bookend City Initiative
In January, Reach Out and Read launched the Bookend City Initiative to encourage ROR regional leaders, local officials and pediatric care providers to work together to promote early literacy for every child in their community.

AAP Approves Resolution on Reach Out and Read
We are pleased and proud - and grateful - to announce that the 2008 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Annual Leadership Forum approved a resolution to include the Reach Out and Read (ROR) model in their recommendations for pediatricians.

Unsung Hero of ROR: Kerry Stevenson, Security Officer, MGH Revere
Ten years ago, Kerry Stevenson showed up for his first day of work as a security officer at MGH (Massachusetts General Hospital) Revere HealthCare Center. As he walked through MGH Revere on his rounds, he noticed that there was no reading material anywhere-just empty magazine racks and empty bookshelves in the Pediatrics waiting room.
