     ROR American Indian/Alaska Native Update

We have formed a new coalition for ROR American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) which has two primary goals: to expand the number of Indian Health Service (IHS), Tribal and Urban sites that participate in the ROR program, and to increase the availability of Native-themed children's books for ROR programs around the country. This is a collaborative effort between the ROR National Center, the IHS, the Centers for Disease Control Native Diabetes Wellness Program, and the American Academy of Pediatrics' Committee on Native American Child Health.

Dr. Bill Flood, a pediatrician at Inscription House Health Center in Shonto, Arizona, and long-time ROR medical champion, says, "Most IHS and Tribal sites lack the resources - financial and staff - to provide the broad array of developmental screening and intervention our children often need. ROR offers the potential to leverage our limited
resources and provide both assessment and intervention in one swoop. This new coalition is a great first step in making this wonderful program more widely available to the children in our practices."

Currently, only about 40 out of approximately 300 IHS and Tribal medical sites participate in ROR. The Coalition plans to target the Oklahoma City IHS Area during 2008, as this Area represents the largest AI/AN population and currently has only four IHS, Tribal, or Urban sites implementing the ROR program. Technical assistance and support will be provided to other IHS/Tribal sites outside of the Oklahoma City IHS Area as well.
