AAP Approves Resolution on Reach Out and Read

We are pleased and proud - and grateful - to announce that the 2008 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Annual Leadership Forum approved a resolution to include the Reach Out and Read (ROR) model in their recommendations for pediatricians.

The resolution was submitted by 2 Districts and 14 chapters! Many, many thanks to them all: District II, District IX, Alabama Chapter, Connecticut Chapter, Iowa Chapter, Maryland
Chapter, Massachusetts Chapter, Minnesota Chapter, Mississippi Chapter, Michigan Chapter, Ohio Chapter, Oregon Chapter, Pennsylvania Chapter, Virginia Chapter, West Virginia Chapter, and Utah Chapter. Most of all, special thanks to Dr. Benard Dreyer and New York District III, where the resolution originated. It was passed without any emendations or deletions. This is great news, and represents a big step forward in the AAP's recognition of the importance of promoting literacy at primary care visits, and also of the evidence base that supports the ROR model. Thanks to Dr. Dreyer and Dr. Pamela High for their work on this final version, and for guiding the process - and to everyone who signed on and supported it.

Once approved, these resolutions get assigned to committees and sections; this resolution has been assigned to: Bright Futures, the Committee on Early Childhood, Adoption and Dependent Care, the Section on Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, the Provisional Section on Early Education and Child Care, and the Department of Practice.

If you check out the resolution on the AAP website, you will get to read strong expressions of support for the measure from the COECADC and from the Council on Community Pediatrics, along with other descriptions of the importance of Reach Out and Read, including this: "Bright Futures supports the Reach Out and Read (ROR) model. The Bright Futures Guidelines for Health Supervision of Infants, Children, and Adolescents - 3rd edition cites ROR as an important and successful practice-based intervention for health care professionals to consider especially those serving low-income populations."
