     Bookend City Initiative

In January, Reach Out and Read launched the Bookend City Initiative to encourage ROR regional leaders, local officials and pediatric care providers to work together to promote early literacy for every child in their community.

A Bookend City is a community in which 100% of the eligible pediatric practices have implemented ROR. After a community has been declared a Bookend City, the ROR National Center will create a certificate that can be framed and presented to the Mayor or Board of Selectmen. In addition, the National Center will create special certificates for every medical practice in the community that participates in ROR.

If a Bookend City has five or more eligible pediatric practices that all implement ROR, the National Center will also create a set of specially designed, engraved glass bookends to present to
the Mayor or Board of Selectmen. The bookends bear the ROR logo, the community's name and the date it earned the Bookend City designation. Becoming a Bookend City provides a great opportunity to create a press event and raise awareness about ROR.

Fall River, MA was the first community in the nation to be awarded Bookend City status in February, and an event was held with the mayor, Fall River practitioners, and staff from ROR-MA and the National Center. The event earned ROR press on television and in several local newspapers.

For helpful information about hosting a Bookend City event, please visit the Bookend City Initiative page on myROR: http://www.myror.org/fund_bookend.aspx.

If you have questions about the Bookend City Initiative, or think your community might be eligible, please contact Matt Ferraguto in the ROR National Center at matt.ferraguto@reachoutandread.org or 617-455-0645.
