Reach Out and Read for Providers

Reach Out and Read Training Options

The Reach Out and Read National Center offers flexible training/re-training options for clinicians, described below.

In all cases, medical provider training is documented by completing and submitting attendance information in the Training section of myROR's Program Administration. Downloadable sign-in sheets for recording of attendance at trainings may be found at: Training Attendance Sheet.

ROR Provider Training Options

Live Training

If you are a new ROR Program with a large number of clinical staff and providers, the ROR National Center, or your regional Coalition if applicable, may be able to arrange one live training session for five or more providers, with an experiences ROR trainer. The trainer, who will also be an ROR provider, will need at least an hour to review material with the providers, and may also advise other clinical and administrative staff. We strongly suggest that when the new online CME course (see below) is available (projected release: June 2010), providers take advantage of the free CME option and complete the online course for credit.

Many new ROR Programs, regardless of size, may still want to hold an event to celebrate the launch of the Program and to help clinical and administrative staff understand their roles. While it will not be considered a formal training session, this orientation may include information about the ROR model and details about clinic logistics. Coalition Leaders may be able to help arrange these orientation events, which can be both valuable and enjoyable, but which do not replace a formal training session with either a live trainer, or the online course for every provider.

Training Presentation for New Programs

For Programs with smaller numbers of providers, the ROR National Center provides a PowerPoint presentation with video clips that explains:

  • How to use the book in the exam room.
  • The importance of offering anticipatory parental guidance on literacy issues.

Watching the presentation, combined with reading handouts from the ROR manual, is an excellent training option. We would ask that all providers at a new Program watch the presentation, and the National Center will be happy to make sure that any questions which come up are referred to trainers and/or experienced providers. You may direct your questions about training either to your Coalition Leader or to the National Programs Assistant at info@reachoutandread.org.

Online CME Course

Reach Out and Read has recently redesigned and modernized our training curriculum, and we are in the process of creating a new online training program that will replace the previous online CME Course. The new training program incorporates video vignettes of Reach Out and Read in the exam room to help both new and experienced providers get a real sense of the possibilities that books and literacy guidance offer in primary care. Once the new online training program is available, ROR providers and staff will be notified via email and the ROR Programs Newsletter.
