How Reach Out and Read Benefits Bilingual Families

Reach Out and Read

Reach Out and Read recognizes that English is not the first language for many of the families we serve nationwide. Reach Out and Read also understands that difficulty with the English language is the reason that many parents do not read to their young children

Early literacy experts confirm that no matter what language parents read aloud to their children in, they are helping to develop the early reading skills critical to success in school. Children still learn that the words on the page correspond to the pictures and that words are made up of different letters/characters/syllables, and they learn about words that rhyme. Most importantly, because they're reading together with their parents every day, children are building a lasting, positive association with books and reading.

That is why Reach Out and Read encourages parents to read to their children in whatever language is most comfortable to them. Reach Out and Read achieves this by offering bilingual books in 13 different languages to providers nationwide.

In addition, Reach Out and Read providers have found that reading multilingual books to children can also make parents more proficient in English.

Currently, the official Reach Out and Read Catalog offers bilingual children's books in the following 13 languages:

Arabic
Korean
Bengali
Polish
Bosnian
Portuguese
Cambodian
Russian
Chinese
Spanish
