Training and Continuing Medical Education

Working to ensure a high-quality and effective Reach Out and Read programs.

At the heart of Reach Out and Read is our nationwide corps of dedicated and experienced medical providers (MDs, DOs, NPs, and PAs). To ensure that all of our providers consistently deliver efficient and high-quality literacy messages to their patients, they are required to take the Reach Out and Read Core Training Course. Other pediatric and family practice clinic staff, as well as Reach Out and Read on-site coordinators, are also encouraged to take the course since all staff who interact with patients and families can reinforce the Reach Out and Read model and message.

The core course covers Reach Out and Read's evidence based program model, research, video clips of providers in the exam room modeling the Reach Out and Read intervention, book choice, and ties literacy anticipatory guidance to Bright Futures guidelines. Free Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits (1.25) are awarded to eligible providers upon completing both the course (with a score of at least 70 percent) and the required evaluation.

Reach Out and Read is proud to provide professional development resources beyond the core training course, including:

  • Reach Out and Read's Leyendo Juntos Course for Primary Care Providers. Offers cultural information, statistics, research, and tools specifically geared to help Reach Out and Read providers effectively promote early literacy among Spanish-speaking families during standard early health supervision visits.
  • Micro-lectures, Provider Bulletin, and Training Webinars. We continually strive to educate our providers on the latest literacy-related research and news. Reach Out and Read intermittently offers micro-lectures by experienced Reach Out and Read medical providers and other specialists from around the country on literacy- and language-related topics targeted to provide research, tips, and information immediately usable in Reach Out and Read exam room encounters.

Reading To Your Four Year Old

Sharing classic tales or nursery rhymes with your child is a wonderful way to expand cultural literacy.  Think about how often a reference to classic children's stories such as "Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?" is made in conversation, with the expectation that everyone knows the stories.
